What types of programs are planned for Teenhq? The Teen Services Department staff is dedicated to creating and offering events that allow teens in our community the opportunity to connect, experience, and imagine. We want teens to learn new skills, explore new activities, and feel apart of a community that supports their interests and encourages them to grow and succeed. Programs include playing games, attempting crafts, exploring STEAM concepts, and even experiencing the library after hours. We are also excited to utilize the "awesome" in our community by inviting professionals and educators to host informative and fun events specficially for teens.

In this article, I reflect on some of what I learned through that experience, including the value of data, the importance of having a vision, how much relationships matter, and the value of professional community. I conclude with a call for dialogue among other builders of teen services to share our experiences and lessons. Instead, I was hired as the first Teen Services Librarian at a library in Connecticut and found myself building a teen program nearly from scratch — all while working part-time first 19 hours a week, then 21, then 28, with more hours each fiscal year. It was my first professional job, and I was building myself as a librarian as much as I was building the YA program at the library; I learned a lot about the real world of library work, about myself, and about the value of professional community. I was lucky enough to have taken a course in library school on how to evaluate library services using different kinds of data gathering methods and different kinds of analyses. Circulation data that predated me were easy to get, but there were only a handful of teen-focused programs held before I arrived, so it was important to choose my metrics and start establishing baseline data as early as possible. My supervisor was the head of collection management, so I was able to watch closely how the YA collections were performing.

Teen Programming: A Mover & Shaker's Recipe for Impact and Success
Film and book critics at your local library. Because most libraries have an audio and video section, how about offering teens an opportunity to write reviews on their favorite movie, book, or audiobook? They can recommend material they've viewed, they can offer a critique, and most importantly, this gives them some ownership in the library and helps them build writing skills. This can even turn into a weekly or monthly library publication. Technology Workshops led by teens and aimed at their peers or tweens are a great way to involve teens in the library and help them build important soft skills like time management, self-confidence and more.
The lunch program is an excellent opportunity to introduce families to the great programs and activities they can find at the library and provide learning opportunities for children and teens while school is out. Once you are ready, we encourage libraries to maximize the programming opportunities provided by the Lunch at the Library program, by creating programs tailored to the children and teens who come to the library for summer meals. The key to the most meaningful programming is to have staff available to plan, implement, evaluate and then change the programs if necessary. The programming suggestions below range from passive programs and activities that can be implemented with few staff and by volunteers, to more in-depth programming that will require more staff time.
